Waves L4 Ultramaximizer 2025 Review: Great or Average?

October 2, 2025  ยท  By VDAM  ยท  8 min read

The Waves L4 Ultramaximizer is built for loud, clean masters in 2025's streaming era. I've tested it, studied the manual, and put it through its paces. It's a beastly maximizer โ€” but not a full mastering chain.

What Is the L4?

The L4 is a peak limiter with a real-time adaptive engine that analyzes transients, crest factor, and envelope to adapt release, lookahead, and attack. Five limiting modes: Modern, Smooth, Aggressive, Safe, L2 Legacy. True Peak and Oversampling up to x16. EBU R128 loudness meter built in.

Real-World Testing

What I Like

  • Transparent limiting across all modes
  • Upward compression adds real warmth
  • Five modes cover every genre
  • Pro-grade EBU R128 loudness meter
  • ~$29 is incredibly competitive

What I Don't Like

  • No EQ or imaging โ€” not a one-plugin fix
  • CPU-heavy at x16 oversampling
  • GUI feels slightly dated
Verdict

A must for loud, polished masters โ€” especially as the last plugin in a chain. At around $29, it's an almost no-brainer for anyone serious about loudness control in 2025.
